New Villanova University Business Intelligence Program Provides Professionals With Must~Have Skills and Industry Certification ~ 100% Online

TAMPA, FL/PRNewswire/ ~ Increasing global competition, volatile economic conditions and unprecedented quantities of data have made business intelligence crucial to a company’s success. With the new online Master Certificate in Business Intelligence from U.S. News-ranked Villanova University, professionals can gain vital skills employers seek, expanding their expertise in data architecture, analysis, modeling, measurement and more.

Knowledge of this in-demand discipline can also lead to new opportunities, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010-11 Occupational Outlook Handbook projecting employment of systems and database administrators to increase 30% through 2018. Other professionals can benefit from business intelligence knowledge as well. For project managers to marketing researchers, business intelligence answers critical questions, such as:

~ Which regions perform, and where can I improve?

~ What products are selling, and which are failing?

~ Why am I losing money, and how can I make more?

Students engaging in Villanova’s new Master Certificate in Business Intelligence online will take three courses: Essentials of Business Intelligence, Mastering Data Management and Technology, and Advanced Data Architecture and Intelligence. Upon successful completion of the courses, which include a certification exam and project, students will be recognized as a Certified Professional in Business Intelligence (CPBI).

“While business intelligence has been part of the corporate vernacular for decades, the solutions were used mainly by large organizations,” says Sid Ghatak, Villanova faculty and consultant. “Today, from financial firms to fast food franchises, companies both big and small are using business intelligence to improve financial and operational performance. There’s no better time to get business intelligence certification and take your knowledge to new levels.”

As with Villanova’s other master certificate programs, students will be immersed in a 100% online video-based e-learning environment, interacting with faculty and classmates through live chat and discussion boards.

Longest serving Airman ~ 46 years ~ calls it a career

by Tech. Sgt. Richard Williams Air Force Public Affairs Agency

Washington DC (AFNS) ~~ As the sun sets on the career of Maj. Gen. Alfred K. Flowers, he looks back with a sense of accomplishment.

Flowers, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, is set to retire from the Air Force on Jan. 1, 2012.

With 46 years of service to his country, Flowers is the longest serving Airman and currently the longest serving Air Force officer who began their service since the creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947.

“When you start at age 17, you can get a lot done by the time you are 60,” Flowers said.

A Kinston, N.C., native, Flowers was raised by his grandparents, who were sharecroppers. He credits humble beginnings as the foundation that carried him to where he is today.

“Being raised by grandparents who instilled the morals, the values, the integrity of doing the right thing and treating people the way you want to be treated has been important,” he said. “I credit a lot of my makeup, morals and ethical values and attitudes to them.”

These values guided Flowers to perform his best in school and propelled him to graduate high school at 17.

Flowers knew the opportunity to further his education after high school was bleak. However, there were other ways to succeed for someone with motivation, drive and a willingness to perform their best every day.

He followed the model of a cousin who had joined the Army a few years earlier and was doing well. He asked his grandmother’s permission to join the Air Force in 1965. Upon completion of basic military training, Flowers received a direct to duty assignment as a supply warehouseman at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., which he recalls was a completely different environment from where he grew up.

After spending two years at Grand Forks AFB, Flowers was retrained into air transportation and received one of his most difficult assignments of his career ~~ casualty collection at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam, in 1968.

“I knew that there was a war going on and it was a dangerous place,” Flowers said.

“The first day we showed up there was a rocket attack about an hour later, so there I was, a brand new 19-year-old Airman, trying to find my way to the bunker because we were under a rocket attack,” he said. “It was eye opening and quite frightening.”

In Vietnam, Flowers’ primary mission was to haul wounded and deceased soldiers out of the jungle at night.

“It was a job that had to be done but one that was very difficult,” Flowers said. “Those young Soldiers and Marines deserved all the dignity and respect we could give.”

Upon completion of his tour in Vietnam, Flowers arrived at Norton AFB, Calif., where he met his wife. The two had only been married for two weeks when she received orders to Clark Air Base, Philippines; after six months of separation, he received a joint spouse assignment.

During his time at Clark AB, Flowers began a quest to further his education with the support of his wife, who he credits as a large influence on not only his career but his life as well.

He retrained as an accounting specialist during assignments to Lackland AFB, Texas, and Charleston AFB, S.C., and in 1975, after completing his bachelor’s degree, he applied and was accepted to Air Force Officer Training School.

At this time, Flowers’ wife, who was also an Airman, received orders to Iraklion AB, Crete. He would have to make a decision: accept his commission with no guarantee of joining his family after OTS completion or decline the commission and go with his family.

“That was an easy decision for me; I went with her and our 4-year-old and decided I would reapply later in my career,” Flowers said.

The move to Crete did not deter Flowers from continuing his goal of higher education and pursuing a career as an officer. Flowers finished his master’s degree and applied for Officer Training School and this time was denied.

He and his family then moved to Travis AFB, Calif., in 1977 where he again reapplied to OTS and was denied. He waited a short time and, while waiting for his promotion date to sew on master sergeant, he decided to reapply to OTS again and was accepted in 1978.

“My wife had been very instrumental with supporting me while I was furthering my education and extremely supportive after I made my transition from the enlisted side to the officer side,” Flowers said.

Flowers was commissioned in 1978 as a financial management officer. He credits the leaders he had with molding him into the officer he has become today and said it wasn’t always an easy transition.

The biggest challenge was mentally adjusting to life in the officer corps, Flowers said.

“Expectations are different and challenges are different,” he said.

There were many mentors who helped mold Flowers’ career and he recalls his time at the 347th Tactical Fighter Squadron Moody AFB, Ga., and Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley AFB, Va., as assignments where his leadership helped unlock his potential as an officer.

Through the selfless leadership of others, Flowers said he was allowed to try and succeed or fail based on the support of others around him. This is something he has tried to pass on to enlisted and officers alike throughout the years.

One important piece to a successful mission, according to Flowers, is everyone working together as a team. He said at times he felt a distinct advantage having spent 13 years as an enlisted Airman; it allowed him to mesh officer and enlisted capabilities.

“The thing that you can never forget as an officer is if you are going to be successful, the enlisted community and all of those around you are what make you successful,” Flowers said. “None of us are good enough to make ourselves successful, and I never forgot where I came from.”

Throughout his career Flowers has completed 25 assignments, all of which he says were unique and challenging; however, he said his best assignment was to U.S. Special Operations Command, where he served as the director of resources.

“I think the reason I cherish it so much is because of the great work those operators are doing in today’s fight with the Global War on Terrorism,” Flowers said. “I had the opportunity to understand how those great Americans, that small cadre of special operations forces, are making a difference in the fight today.

“To be able to work the resourcing for them and ensure they had what they needed to do their work was a great opportunity and one of my fondest memories over the past 46 years,” he added.

Besides his assignment to USSOCOM, Flowers said commanding 2nd Air Force at Keesler AFB, Miss., which oversees all Air Force basic military and nonflying technical training, was his most important assignment.

“Having been an Airman who went through the 3706th Training Squadron in 1965 and being able to return and command 2nd Air Force was one of my greatest opportunities,” he added.

The training that takes place at Lackland AFB is the most important thing the Air Force does, he said.

“If we don’t get it right there, we don’t get it right in the Air Force,” Flowers said.

The ability to mold young Airmen into future Air Force leaders placed Flowers exactly where he wanted to be, “with the people,” he said. In his view, people are still the most important asset and their abilities and understanding of what is asked of them is crucial to future success.

“This is not about you, this is about service,” Flowers said. “And service sometimes means neglecting your own needs for the good of the whole, the nation or the service.”

Throughout his career, Flowers has worked to ensure Airmen have what they need to accomplish the mission. Whether it was as a supply warehouseman in 1965, an air transportation specialist during Vietnam or an enlisted or commissioned officer in financial management, his love for service has always been at the forefront, even through many changes to the service he has faithfully served for 46 years.

“I have seen a lot of changes throughout my career, and most of them were for the better,” Flowers said. “We all do our jobs and do them the best we can, but we could not do them without the people around us … the people are what I will miss the most.”

Flowers’ retirement ceremony and banquet was held at Bolling AFB, Md., Nov. 16.

New $5,000,000 Security Plan for Key Employees of Investment Banks and Hedge Funds

DANBURY, CT /PRNewswire/ ~~ Corporate Compensation Plans (CCP) announced today a new $5,000,000 financial security Plan for key employees and partners of investment banks and hedge funds. The purpose of this unique disability insurance plan is to indemnify the employees against the catastrophic losses caused by career-ending injuries or illnesses.

“When highly paid individuals suffer career-ending injuries or illnesses,” said Philip Davis, President of CCP, “their salaries, bonuses, and payments to their retirement plans stop. In addition, their stock options and other stock-related plans terminate. As a result, they and their families can lose millions of dollars.”

For example, the proxy statement of a large investment bank shows that their 50-year-old CFO is earning $4,100,000 in salary and bonus ($2,600,000 after tax) and was awarded another $11,000,000 in stock. Assuming the same annual compensation for the next 10 years – and disregarding any stock awards – here is what can happen if he or she has a career-ending disability:

    ~~ After-tax cash income ($2,600,000 X 10) – $26,000,000

    ~~ Less disability insurance @ $500,000 a year – $5,000,000

    ~~ Loss of cash income – ($21,000,000)

Almost all highly paid individuals will face losses of this magnitude if they become totally disabled. To help solve this problem, CCP – in conjunction with one of the world’s largest insurance companies – has designed a financial security plan for key personnel of investment banks and hedge funds with these features and benefits:

~~ They can be paid up to $5,000,000 in a lump-sum, tax-free cash benefit if an injury or illness prevents them from working in their own professions for more than 12 months.

~~ They can acquire their benefits on a guaranteed issue basis without medical examinations or the need to answer medical questions.

~~ They may be able to acquire an additional $5,000,000 of cash benefits with evidence of insurability – for a total tax-free benefit of $10,000,000.

~~ One of the largest insurance carriers in the world – and one that has exceptionally high financial ratings – is underwriting their protection.

“Our Plan,” said Tasha Mayberry, CCP’s Vice President of Marketing & Development, “will help Investment Banks and Hedge Funds attract and retain the top talent they need to compete in today’s global economy. For example, if the company pays for the benefit it can restrict portability. In addition, the Plan can be a very attractive component of a ‘sign-on’ bonus.”

The incomes of the highly paid have far outstripped their firms’ traditional long-term disability insurance plans – which typically are capped at relatively low income amounts and do not cover stock awards and retirement plan contributions. The result is a huge gap between an individual’s after-tax income before a disability and the amount of insurance benefits available after a disability occurs.

“CCP has built the systems necessary to administer and communicate the Plan,” said John Nelson, CCP’s Vice President of Technology. He added, “The purpose of these systems – which include our proprietary e-signature enrollment platform – is to make certain that human resources will not have to invest much of their time in the implementation of the Plan.”

For nearly 40 years Corporate Compensation Plans has been providing tax-advantaged benefit programs to many of the largest companies and law firms in the country. Your Resume ~ No One Really Reads Them So Why Are Resumes So Important?!

by Bill Golden CEO, USAJobZoo.com, IntelligenceCareers.com and USADefenseIndustryJobs.com

Resumes & Jobs / The Rare Find: Reinventing Recruiting – Businessweek http://ow.ly/70OF1 … BusinessWeek writes:

“A new era of talent hunting has begun. It’s happening not only at high-tech companies such as Facebook, but also at Army bases, ad agencies, investment banks, Hollywood studies, corporate boardrooms, college admissions offices, and even at nanny agencies. In all these fields, experts don’t just sort résumés. They pick people and build teams in a profoundly different way. Traditional measures of past achievement, such as test scores and academic degrees, are losing power, and companies are getting better at looking for those future superstars who deliver many times the value of someone who is merely good.”

BusinessWeek’s article is a good read … yet while it sounds all good and futuristic the methods discussed really apply to probably less than 1% of the 1% of people that find jobs.

For really, really unique jobs this has been true for awhile ~~ testing of individuals and creative interviews with current staff. (I once worked in a technology company where every potential hire was voted upon by current employees before they were hired, circa 1998). However, the 99.99% of the rest of the workforce world needs to stay focused on getting found ~~ and that still requires a resume.

Getting found requires a good resume and an understanding of how those resumes get found.

Best approach on the planet: network. Meet people or let folks know that you are searching for a new career challenge. Make your resume for them to pass along. This method probably accounts for 50-60% of all hires in the technical and professional world. Many companies even pay their employees bonuses for recommeding someone that eventually gets hired ~~ but a resume is still very much required as the person recommending you must submit a resume to the HR department to get the process started.

Second best approach (works for the few): be good at what you do. Employers often do the reverse of the above ~~ they ask others ‘who do you know that does …?’ Once you get approached, you may be asked to meet but your resume will need to accompany you.

Next second best approach (works for the many): don’t send out resumes willy-nilly. It just costs postage and they rarely get read. If you are lucky you will get a note in email that says please visit our website and add your resume. You need to get your resume in a resume database appropriate to your skillset and interests. There are many niche and specialized resume databases on jobboards, plus you need to add your resume to the corporate websites resume databases.

Your resume being in a database is very important. The overwhelming majority of recruiters do not read resumes. They use search statistics to identify candidates.

How a resume database gets used: a set of job criteria entered into a resume search system returns a statistical value as to the probability that you are a person that should be considered as matching their needs (kinda like dating services). If there is a high degree of match then only then does your resume ever get read ~~ assuming that you were probably a 90-95% or higher match.

Your resume and having a resume is very important, and will be for a long time to come. So you may find yourself in some interesting interview situations but it will all begin with a resume for a very long time to come.

FYI Tidbits – Seven Tips For Finding the Job You Want

It’s tough to find a job these days, much less the job of one’s dreams, in the slowly-healing economy. Long gone is the era when a good resume and a few interviews did the trick. Yet too many of us still chase our dreams in the same old ways. Says contrarian headhunter Nick Corcodilos, “If you don’t believe America’s employment system is broken, ask yourself why your resumes don’t lead to interviews, and why interviews don’t lead to job offers. “ Corcodilos, publisher of Ask The Headhunter, says the problem is automation. “Job offers don’t come from job postings; they come from people. Your gut tells you that, but your behavior suggests you’re wasting too much time waiting for a job to come along.” Here, he offers some actionable tips to landing a position, even in these trying times. Corcodilos’s “Ask The Headhunter” books—including “Answer Kit: How Can I Change Careers?” and “How to Work with Headhunters. . . and How To Make Headhunters Work For You offer more in-depth ideas for getting or changing jobs.
